4) Upper Kennebec and Moose River Valleys Upper Kennebec and Moose River Valleys is the best region for honeymooners who favor the great outdoors with all the activities on offer, from hiking, kayaking and whitewater rafting for the more adventurous to fishing and snowmobiling. Augusta, with the historically rich Maine State Museum, the neighboring State House with its impressive dome and the ancient Fort Western, where history is kept alive. Jackman is renowned for its snowmobiling and fishing opportunities, the latter evident from its easy accessibility to many lakes and ponds. The Attean View Rest Area is ideal for a cosy picnic for two and offers scenic views of the Attean Lake and the mountains. The Moose River Bow trip is an interesting expedition with great sightings of wildlife. The Forks is famous for its whitewater rafting on the Kennebec River and Dead River or even ATV tours and snowmobiling and the breathtaking Moxie Falls.
5)Western Maine
Western Maine, with its lakes and mountains, villages and fairs and abundant wildlife, is a treat for the eyes. Bethel is a prime area for skiing and is also famous for its Grafton Notch State Park, popular both in winter for its ice climbing and in summer for the rock climbing opportunities. Fryeburg is rich in historical architecture as well as the many public parks where one can stroll along wooded trails or have a leisurely meal. The Saco River is ideal for a lazy trip and to take in the backdrop of the mountains. Naples is a charming little town on the Long Lake and Brandy Pond adjoining it has a variety of water-based activities and land based entertainment.
6) The Mid-Coast Region
The Mid-Coast Region, with its charming seaside resorts, quaint villages and impressive peninsulas, is a feast for the senses. Boothbay Harbor is a seaside town with a busy harbor, sport fishing, cruises and live concerts and picturesque hiking trails. Camden offers scenic views of the Camden Hills and the bay and a trip up to Mount Battie is worth it for its splendid panoramic scenery. Further south, the Maine coastal region continues to offer scenic views, stunningly revealed if you drive along Ocean Avenue, alongside the Kennebunk River with the shipbuilding town of Kennebunkport, from where you can also enjoy many scenic vistas by experiencing ‘Cloud Nine’ on a hot air balloon or take in a bit of history by visiting the Seashore Trolley Museum. Kittery is an old settlement with some of the finest homes, the ancient Fort McClary, and as it is located on the coast it is very popular as a summer retreat. Ogunquit and Old Orchard both have miles of beautiful stretches of sandy beach that is a haven for honeymooners who just want to soak up the sun. The former offers the Marginal Way scenic walk that ends in Perkin's Cove and the latter has the Palace Playland for the honeymooners with a fun-loving streak.
7) The Maine Highlands
The Maine Highlands feature some incredible towns like Bangor, on the Penobscot River, known for its sawmills and lumber industry, which the 31 foot statue of Paul Bunyan is testimonial to. Honeymooners who are horror freaks and Stephen King fans, can relive some of their favorite scenes from his books here, as it is his home and Bangor forms the backdrop for many scenes. The Sebasticook Valley, with its myriad rivers, is paradise for ‘fishy’ honeymooners or romantic paddlers. Greenville, on Maine’s largest, Moosehead Lake, boasts of Mount Kineo rising from the middle and has some great views from its peak. Or if you’re crazy about nature and wildlife, it’s the best place to spot the moose on a safari or go dogsledding or even undertake an expedition on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Millinocket has the Baxter State Park and Maine’s tallest peak, Mount Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Another natural wonder is the canyon of Gulf Hagas with its gushing falls and plunging gorges.
